If you’re looking to upgrade your flooring with some brand new carpet, then you’ve got a few things to think about. Of course the main thing is the carpet, what colour you want, what thickness you want the pile, whether you want it stain resistant and maybe more importantly how much you want to spend. But something that many people seem to forget about which is key is underlay! Here at Welch Mill Carpet Showroom, we’ve put together this blog to help answer some questions you might have about underlay.

Before you decide on your underlay, you need to think about what properties it will need to have. For example, if you have underfloor heating you need to look for underlay/carpet that has a low thermal resistance in order for the heat to travel up as effectively as possible.
If you’ve already decided on your carpet, you need to check whether it has a latex backing or not. If it does, then you need to use a underlay that can be installed by using the double stick method.
Maybe you live in a flat, or you have creaky floorboards and you’re looking to reduce the amount of noise levels. Then it would be beneficial to look for an underlay type with a high decibel rating. Usually, the thicker the underlay is, the more noise reducing properties they tend to have.
However, this isn’t the case when it comes to a comfortable underfoot feel. To get the best underfoot feel possible, you need to look for a dense underlay. The denser the underlay, the better ability it has to bounce back and create that cosy feeling.
